Bharathanatyam by
Manjari Chandrasekhar
June 12th, 2010
THE BHARATANATYA recital of Manjari, daughter and
disciple of Prof. C. V. Chandrasekhar under the
auspices of the cultural wing of Bharatiya Vidya
Bhavan, came like a fresh shower in the midst of an
oppressive summer. The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan
Kalakendra, headed by Justice K. S. Bhaktavatsalam,
deserves praise for providing a forum for dedicated
aritstes, who work hard to uphold the traditional
values of this dance form.

Kutcheri by
Vijay Siva
May 14th, 2010 R.K. Sriramkumar - Violin, Vaidyanathan - Mridangam
Vijay Siva always seems to maintain a certain
uncompromising standard for his concerts. From the
beginning to the end, the tempo never sagged. He
began with Patnam Subramania Iyer's Hamsadhwani
Varnam ‘Pagavari' set to Adi Tala. The
characteristics of Suddhasaveri were brought out in
the niraval and swaras for ‘Samajavarada' of Poochi
Srinivasa Iyengar.

Vallaki School of Music & CCMA
present - Grand Veena Concert by
Vidwan D. Balakrishna - Veena
April 17th, 2010 Sri.Indiresh Maktal -
Mridangam
Don’t take music as a profession,” was Veena
Doreswamy Iyengar’s earnest plea to his son D.
Balakrishna, who reminisces his father’s
oft-repeated words of wisdom. Iyengar was the
Asthana Vidwan of the erstwhile Mysore Maharaja,
Nalvadi Krishna Raja Wodeyar. “It’s a decade since I
lost my father, but I realise the effectiveness of
his warning today, having sensed the economic
temperament of the musical world. It was my father’s
deep-rooted passion for music, along with
far-sightedness that made his belief stronger,” says
Balakrishna, trained under his stern eyes.

CCMA presents Vocal Concert by
Madurai Sundar (Vocal)
March 6th, 2010 Jaishankar Balan - Violin,
Vinod Seetharaman - Mridangam
I was born into a family where Carnatic music, in
some form and degree, was part of day-to-day life.
While my grand parents and parents were
knowledgeable listeners-connoisseurs of Carnatic
music, I had in my aunt Smt. Ananthalakshmi
Sadagopan a reputed concert musician, who had had
her training under stalwarts like Sathur A.G.
Subramania Iyer and Semmangudi Sriinivasa Iyer. All
these set the tone for what was to become an
integral part of my life.
